Why Having the Right Mindset is Important?
Your mindset affects how you look at yourself and the world, it profoundly affects how you lead your life.
Studies have shown that with a Growth Mindset, your happiness, business, relationship, and the money you make will increase. And you will even live 3–5 years longer.
You can always choose your mindset and shift from a Fixed Mindset to a Growth Mindset.
Fixed Mindset
- They think that their skills, basic quality, and life are fixed
- They like to be praised for their results and being looked up by others
- Society and the public tend to think in a fixed mindset. For example, in business, shareholders ask for how much result and money you make, and they rate each person in terms of how much money they make; In sports, they celebrate gifted athletes, instead of hard work
Growth Mindset
- They believe their basic quality can be changed through effort and hard work
- Everyone has different abilities and it takes hard work and time to deliver better results (10,000-hour rule)
- They like to be praised for the depth of their work, how hard they work, and the challenges that they overcome
- They understand sometimes the result isn’t up to them
- “Success is eventual”. You just gonna keep working, and better yourself to get success
- Obstacles are good things to help you grow faster
- Criticism is welcomed and helps you succeed faster
- They want to live up to their potential and improve themselves over and over again
- Example #1: Michael Jordon was cut from his high school team. He left home at 6 am and practiced at school. He was picked 3rd in the NBA draft. But he had a growth mindset of continuously improving himself, and he became the greatest basketball player of all time
- Example #2: Even though Tiger Woods was the best golfer in the world. He changed his swing to get even better, and trained 2–3 hours longer than anyone else, even though he’s already the best
Exercise
- You can choose to have a Growth Mindset and give up the Fixed Mindset. Our mindsets are formed by our environment, experience, and childhood (our parents’ mindset). But recognize that it’s possible to choose what mindsets we want to acquire.
- Do a 30 Day Challenge of living, being, and existing in Growth Mindset. Whenever you find yourself thinking in a Fixed Mindset, give $100 to the person closest to you.
- Examine whether you’re having a Fixed Mindset or a Growth Mindset in different aspects of your life. You might have a Growth Mindset in sports, but a Fixed Mindset in business or relationship.
